Fuel Systems: What You Need to Know
The fuel system in your Land Rover is made up of many parts -- a fuel tank, for one, plus a fuel pump, one or more fuel filters, and either a carburetor (in older SUV models) or fuel injectors (in newer ones). Together, they do a simple job: they keep gas flowing to the engine.
How that works, though, is a little more complicated. The tank, for instance, holds gas, while the pump draws it out and sends it to the engine. The fuel filtration captures byproducts and other impurities in the gas and keeps them from getting into the engine. Finally, the carburetor or injector system works with the pump, a network of oxygen sensors, and an emissions control system to manage what gas is sent to the motor.
There are four different configurations of these systems, generally. One is in-tank pump (with or without a sucking a jet pump), and the others are semi-in-tank and pump set. Whichever your Land Rover SUV has, it's not permanent; its parts will wear out and/or fail sooner or later, usually after a lifetime of use. To stave off trouble moving gas, be sure you inspect your fuel system for problems regularly. If you think it might have a few, but you're not sure what to look for, you're in luck: they show up as telltale symptoms, including:
- Trouble starting
- A sputtering engine
- Sudden loss of engine power (especially when towing or driving uphill)
- Whining sounds coming from the fuel tank
- Worsening fuel economy
- The temperature gauge on the dash reading hot
- Random surging (the feeling of accelerating when your vehicle isn't actually doing it)
See any of them, and you should do that fuel system inspection. Replace the parts indicated by its results. Before you buy any, though, be sure you're getting the genuine article.
