Drive Shafts FAQs
What do they do? Transform torque and rotary energy from your vehicle's engine into motion -- the movement of all the auto parts that get it going.
What types are there? Front-wheel (FWD), rear-wheel (RWD), four-wheel (4WD), and all-wheel (AWD).
How does front-wheel drive work? It uses the front wheels to move the vehicle, and all parts are installed up front. Constant velocity or "CV" joints connect to the differential to make everything run.
How does rear-wheel drive work? It uses the rear wheels for motive power. The drive shaft connects to the transmission at one end and the differential on the other. It uses universal or "U" joints instead of CV joints.
How do four-wheel and all-wheel drive work? They use two drive shafts. The one up front connects to both the front differential and the transfer case via U-joints. Every wheel helps move the vehicle in this case.
What are the signs of a bad drive shaft? That depends on the part. A worn or failing U-joint or coupler or bad carrier bearings may show up as trouble turning, a vibrating undercarriage, and loud clunks when shifting. A worn or failing CV joint, however, may appear as clicks or knocks. Shuddering during acceleration, on the other hand, can mean a loose U-joint.
In any case, further damage to the drive shaft can follow these. If you need to buy a new one, be sure it's the genuine article.
Why buy a genuine OEM drive shaft? It'll come from Land Rover guaranteed compatible with your SUV. You may not get the same promise from aftermarket drive shafts.
